Socktober to warm hearts at Dorothy Day House

Each year in October (or Socktober, as they call it), Mayo Clinic Food Services sets out donation boxes for staff to fill with new socks to give to those in need.

Andrew Schacht, a chef in Mayo Clinic Food Services, knew of an organization that could truly use the donated socks. Schacht has been helping out over the weekends by cooking breakfast at the Dorothy Day House, a housing shelter for those in need in Rochester.

Since the Dorothy Day House hadn't received many donations, Schacht knew that the socks would be put to good use. And he wasn't wrong.

"The Dorothy Day House was extremely happy about the sock donation," he says. "Some really great people run the Dorothy Day House, and their volunteers there are some of the nicest people I've ever met."
