Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology recognized as ‘Outstanding Employer’ for its work with PossAbilities

Mayo Clinic's Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology recently received an "Outstanding Employer Award" from the Minnesota Organization for Habilitation and Rehabilitation.

The award recognizes the department's work with PossAbilities, a Rochester-based nonprofit organization that provides opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to contribute to and connect with the community.

"This recognition is a testament to our strong partnership with our PossAbilities colleagues, and fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment where they are truly valued as integral members of our team," says Joe Doppler, operations manager in Anatomic Pathology.

Staff from PossAbilities began working in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology labeling test tubes in 2010. They started working with the department's Neuroimmunology Lab in 2010, the Clinical Mass Spectrometry Lab in 2015, and supporting work in the Hilton Building in 2018 by shuttling patient slides between labs and floors.

Today, 28 PossAbilities staff members support these labs at Mayo Clinic.

Sue Mackert, executive director of PossAbilities, says the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic was given the award for its "deep commitment to providing employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities and the overall culture of the clinic in its advocacy and inclusion for people of all abilities."
