Mayo Clinic Rochester hosted the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day event for Olmsted County on Saturday, April 27.
Opioid Take Back Day, overseen by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), is held twice-a-year and provides a safe and anonymous environment for patients to dispose of prescription drugs, while mitigating the potential for medication abuse and diversion.
Mayo partnered with the DEA, Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office, Olmsted Medical Center and the Zumbro Valley Medical Society to coordinate the event. Mayo and community volunteers collected over 470 pounds of prescriptions from more than 455 participants who came to drop off medications. These amounts are less than the 2018 events, but that’s the ultimate intent as we hope there are fewer unused medications in our communities, and therefore fewer to dispose of.
