Eviction Prevention

Legal aid helps families stay in their homes

For many families, paying one big, unexpected bill can mean the rent doesn’t get paid on time. Under Minnesota law, a landlord can file an eviction notice the first day the rent is late. Olmsted County District Court deals with approximately 350 eviction cases per year.

Solution:
Legal Assistance of Olmsted County and Southern Minnesota Regional Legal Services will create a one-stop shop in the Olmsted County Court House where tenants can access information and resources to avoid evictions. Currently, these resources are complicated and time consuming to access. In addition, financial counselors from Lutheran Social Services will work with each client to develop a plan for financial stability.
Impact:
The partners will work with 100 families over a year. The project will reduce immediate financial stress and support housing stability by streamlining help with housing and finances.
Partners:

Healthy Families Thrive

Making immunizations less stressful at the Minnesota Children’s Museum

There are many reasons some families in Olmsted County miss out on recommended vaccinations for their children. For some, parents don’t know where to find free or low-cost vaccinations. For others, there’s the scary factor. The stress and worry around vaccinations can contribute to families falling behind on vaccinations.

Solution:
The Minnesota Children’s Museum and its partners will host family events at the museum offering free immunizations and preventive health care information.
Impact:
The goal is to immunize 650 children from low income families or who would otherwise not have access to this care. By immunizing children in a playful, child-focused environment, the partners hope to break down barriers to seeking later vaccinations in health care clinics.
Partners:
Minnesota Children’s Museum, Olmsted County Public Health, Winona State University-Rochester, Families First of Minnesota (Head Start and School Readiness), Walgreens, Hunt’s Silver Lake Drug
